Our Experience With Robin Deacon

This blog has been written by Drey, Jomiloju and Naameka, our year 10 work experience students.

During the interview, we felt a sense of achievement. I know this as during the interview he was very animated and energetic, which show that he is intelligent and prideful of his work. Additionally, during my time there. We learnt that he worked at Debenhams, and he was employee of the month before he quit and became a professor of fine arts in the university of Chicago to Chase after his dream of artistic freedoms.

We also asked him about if he ever saw his younger self, what he would say and he said that he would have talked to his parent more about his line of wor,k which also inspired me more to talk to my parents and speak out more to others. We also learned that his mother was a part of a Caribbean folk song band when she was younger, but she left because she was “in the flow” of things.

It is important for young people to interview people like Robin Deacon, as Robin Deacon is a successful artist director of SPILL FESTIVAL, therefore it gives inspiration to the younger generations who will be the next in line to lead the country in the future and hopefully become as successful, if not better than Deacon.

Also, it is important to young people to ask questions to Robin Deacon, as it will also boost their confidence as they will learn the ideas and values of SPILL. Furthermore, having a variety of people to talk to, Robin will make sure that everyone has a say in the discussion.

It is also important to platform black and ethic global majority peoples’ stories as it creates awareness, builds confidence, and also creates a permanent imprint in history to show the diverse global economy and show a personal perspective

During the interview, my favourite part was the editing, where I can get rid of all the imperfections in the final piece and add a nice flare to it. In contrast, I enjoyed taking pictures and his storytelling on the Caribbean folk tales
