Stephen Lawrence was a Black British teenager who was murdered in a racially motivated attack on April 22, 1993, in Eltham, South East London.
The murder and subsequent investigation became a watershed moment in British race relations, highlighting institutional racism within the police and criminal justice system.
April 22nd 2023, will mark the 30th anniversary of Stephen Lawrence's murder. The anniversary is a significant milestone, and various events are planned to commemorate Stephen's life, raise awareness about the issues surrounding his murder, and continue the fight for justice.
The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, established in Stephen's memory, is planning a series of events to mark the anniversary, including a gala dinner, a memorial service, and a youth conference.
These events aim to celebrate Stephen's life, support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and promote social cohesion and diversity.
Although a very sad occasion, the anniversary is also an opportunity to reflect on the progress made since Stephen's murder - and the work that still needs to be done.
While significant strides have been made in tackling institutional racism and improving race relations in the UK, discrimination and inequality remain pervasive issues.
We're all aware that the struggle for justice and equality is ongoing, across all areas of life.
Let's use this time to honour Stephen's memory, pay tribute to his family's tireless campaigning for justice, and recommit to the fight against racism and discrimination in all its forms.
